1. Independent advisers have advised on close to $500bn of mergers and
acquisitions in each of the past two years.

2. A lot of bankers are so reliant on the brand behind them that, when it
is eat-what-you-kill, they nearly starve

3. All they are selling [at a boutique] is their expertise, and while they
might look good at a large bank, the client has to have confidence that
their advice, as a standalone service, is that much better than what they
are getting from a bulge-bracket bank with financing capabilities.

4. The percentage of global M&A advised by boutiques slipped from 17.6% to
16.8% last year, generating $473.3bn of deal volume, according to Dealogic.
In Europe, the percentage slipped from 12.4% to 11.8%, accounting for
$95.6bn in deal volume

5. As one boutique founder put it, at a bulge-bracket bank, the chief
executive’s door is always open. At a boutique, only the right solution
will get you into the boardroom.

People Are Spending More Time In Mobile Apps Than On The Web | Social Media Today

People are spending more time inside mobile applications on average than they are on the web, according to an analysis from Flurry, a mobile analytics firm.

Flurry measures the time people spend in apps through its own direct analytics. It got numbers for the web using public data from comScore and Alexa. The analysis is somewhat imperfect, but even if you judge it solely on a directional basis you can see mobile apps are consuming more and more time.

So what are people doing in those apps? Gaming and social networking, which absorb 79% of people’s time, according to Flurry. The rest is news, entertainment, and other apps.

The pieces are falling into place for an “internet of things” | GigaOM

It may be difficult to describe what exactly the phrase “an internet of things” means, but the pieces of the puzzle that are required for that to develop are all here today, ThingM CEO Mike Kuniavsky told attendees at GigaOM’s Mobilize conference in San Francisco. Those puzzle pieces include ubiquitous network connectivity, cloud-based services, cheap assembly of electronics, social design, open collaboration tools and low-volume sales channels. When put together, Kuniavsky said, they create an “innovation ecosystem” that is the foundation for an internet of things.

ThingM is what Kuniavsky called a “micro-OEM” that creates small batch custom electronics for a variety of clients, but the ThingM CEO and co-founder is actually a designer by training, who worked in web design and then user design before founding Adaptive Path, and who still works as a design consultant for large electronics companies and has written a book called Smart Things. The ThingM CEO said that based on his understanding of the custom electronics market, the “landscape in which we’re creating ubiquitous devices is about to fundamentally change.”

Power One (PWER): This company builds power management tools for the utility industry. With federal stimulus and the green tech industry focusing on “smart grid” technologies, PWER is ideally positioned to capitalize on the opportnities. Heres’ the one year chart:
